Recommended outings are a day trip to the picturesque fortified town of Dokkum, a trip to the Frisian Islands Ameland and Schiermonnikoog or a bike ride around the Lauwersmeer. Also worth a visit is to the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre Pieterburen, the fishing village of Zoutkamp or the historical Verhildersum in Leens. For the sporty visitor is a walk on the seawall possible with stunning views over the Waddenzee-area or a walk on the ecologically interesting Orchideeënpad. A day of shopping in Groningen combined with a visit to the Groninger Museum is also a must. Groningen is only 40 minutes drive from Lauwersoog.
